What are the points to note when selecting shafts for DC motors?

The cylindrical part that protrudes from the motor and its housing is the DC motor shaft. The shaft serves as the armature part of the motor's main support and connection structure, as well as the power output component of the DC motor. The shaft is one of the most necessary and critical parts of the motor, as it converts the motor's energy into its intended use. So, what are the factors to consider when selecting a motor shaft? Here's an overview for you

VBL-2857-(1)

The motor shaft must first be strong enough to prevent residual deformation or damage during operation of the DC motor and machining of the shaft. Also, the motor shaft must be stiff enough to keep shaft interference within acceptable limits during operation. Finally, the motor shaft must take into account the critical speed of the shaft and maintain sufficient variance between operating and critical speeds.
To prevent shaft surface wear and scarring in DC motor assembly, the shaft must be harder than the locating ring and the chip must be made of a different material than the locating ring. This is necessary because during the manufacturing process of DC motors, the shaft and the assembly die often collide and there is a certain amount of assembly interference. On the other hand, if a bearing is to be mounted on the shaft, the surface hardness of the shaft must be kept no more than HV450. the surface hardness standard of the shaft for rolling bearings can be relaxed appropriately, and generally no surface heat treatment is done.
