What is DC hollow cup motor

 

Hollow cup motor is a unique DC motor, the hollow meaning is no traditional motor in the middle of the core rotor, the coil (winding) looks like a cup. The biggest feature is this cup-like coil (winding), it has no other support structure, completely made of wire wound, coil through the connecting plate, and commutator, spindle link together, they together form the rotor.

 

Tip: Under normal circumstances, the connecting plate is composed of plastic and epoxy resin, and its role is to fix the wire and transfer the torque.

 

The coil rotates in the gap between the magnet and the housing, thus driving the entire rotor to rotate. This structure completely eliminates the electric energy loss caused by the formation of eddy current in the iron core. Because the weight of the rotor is greatly reduced, the rotational inertia is reduced. Compared with the traditional iron core motor, the performance of large torque acceleration and deceleration is outstanding.

 

Of course, a product can not only have advantages without disadvantages, because there is no iron core support, the coil (winding) can only be made very thin, which also leads to the limited connection strength of the coil and the output shaft, so the whole can not be too big. Generally hollow cup motor maximum power is several hundred watts.

 

Therefore, from a comprehensive point of view, the hollow cup motor can be applied in the drive that requires a fast response. Such as the rapid adjustment of the flight direction of the missile, the rapid automatic focusing of the camera, industrial robots, bionic prosthetics, etc., in these fields, the hollow cup motor can well meet its technical requirements.

 

Should also be its small size, for many products with volume requirements to use hollow cup as a power component is also the best choice, such as: toy car, model airplane, electric toothbrush, mini drone and so on.

 

There is a difference between the brush hollow cup and the brushless hollow cup motor

 

Like the conventional brush motor to brushless motor, the hollow cup brushless motor is also on the basis of the hollow cup brush motor to eliminate the carbon brush, commutator and other structures, and the current conversion is achieved by the control drive board.

Differences between brushed coreless motors and brushless coreless motors

The hollow cup winding is fixed on the annular iron core inside the casing by bonding method. Compared with the conventional brushless motor copper wire wound on the core slot pole, the copper wire material of the hollow cup brushless motor is self-adhesive enamelled wire (coil can be bonded after heating or solvent treatment), there is no winding core. This structure reduces eddy current loss. So the efficiency of the hollow cup brushless motor can reach 80%-90%, while the efficiency of the conventional brushless motor is only about 60%.
