What Are The Driving Methods Of Wheel Motors?

Different drive methods of wheel motors have different advantages and disadvantages, and the operating performance is also different.

1. Reduction drive

This drive technology utilizes a fixed-ratio gearbox and a high-speed internal rotor motor. The motor operates at a maximum speed of 10kr/min and has a relatively high power density.

Advantages: When the torque of the reduction structure is increased, the output torque is higher and the climbing performance is good. It can ensure that the car gets a significant and stable torque at low speed. Small volume, light weight, high specific power and specific efficiency.

Disadvantages: Lubrication is quite challenging, the gears of planetary gear reduction structure have short life, easy to wear, produce a lot of noise, and not easy to dissipate heat.

2. Direct drive

This type of drive utilizes a low-speed external rotor motor whose external rotor is mechanically coupled to the wheel hub. There is no reduction structure, and the motor usually runs at 1.5 Kr/min, and the speed of the motor and the wheel are the same.

Advantages: Due to the absence of a reduction mechanism, the entire drive wheel is more compact, the axial dimensions are smaller than in previous drive forms, and the drive is more efficient.

Disadvantages: High current is required for starting, upwind or climbing hills, which is potentially damaging to the battery and permanent magnets. The peak efficiency of the motor is quite small and it drops rapidly once the load current exceeds a specific threshold.
