Structure form of wheel motor

The motor, brake, reduction mechanism and heat dissipation system usually constitute the wheeled motor power system. Depending on the type of rotor of the motor, wheeled motor power systems are divided into two main types of structures: inner rotor type and outer rotor type. The following is an introduction to these two types of motors.

The advantages of high-speed in-rotor wheel motors are high specific power, light mass, small size, high efficiency, low noise, and low cost; however, the use of a reduction device reduces efficiency and increases unsprung mass, and the maximum speed of the motor is limited by factors such as coil loss, friction loss, and variable speed mechanism capability. Since the outer rotor is directly connected to the wheel without a reduction mechanism, the low-speed outer rotor motor has a simple structure, small axial dimensions, high specific power, can control torque over a wide speed range, and responds quickly. The disadvantage is that in order to increase the torque, the size and mass of the motor must be increased, which leads to higher costs and lower acceleration efficiency.
